What is Seikukan Karate

Seikukan is the style of karate founded by Mr TAINEN TAKEMORI.  He studied directly under Mr Gichin Funakoshi and then went to China for seven years where he then studied martial arts under Mr LA KAI ON. He also studied Zen in Japan, and then blended these three influences to form Seikukan. This name translates as “Silent Sky Building” or “Training Hall under the clear blue (i.e. cloudless) sky.” His son Mr Miki Takemori is the present World Head Instructor and the world head quarters is at Toyama, Japan.

What is Karate-do

It is a highly efficient method of self-defence incorporating the use of most body parts.  It is beneficial for all age groups.  It improves strength, co-ordination, posture, speed, balance etc, and if one follows its basic principles, one cannot help but become more considerate, more respectful, and a more worthwhile citizen.

What does Karate-do Mean

Kara = empty  Te = hand  Do = the way It really means the way to realisation of ones true self through the medium of the empty (mind) hand.

What are its Origins

These lie in India and China, but Karate achieved its maximum early development in OKINAWA. Masters from there travelled to mainland Japan where it was blended with native martial arts and underwent further development.

One of the greatest Okinawan masters was Gichin Funakoshi. KARATE NI SENTE NASHI (There is no first attack in Karate) is inscribed on a monument to him in the Zen monastery of ENKAKUJI in KAMAKURA city.  It embobies the essence of Okinawan Karate.

At Seikukan our aim is to teach children the basics of self defence, fitness and co-ordination. By learning to defend themselves they improve their self-confidence.
